Recap of Day 3
Jack Conger (Univ. of Texas / NCAP / Our Lady of Good Counsel / MCSL’s Flower Valley) is going to Rio. Although he finished 3rd in Tuesday’s finals of the men’s 200m freestyle, short of an individual spot on the U.S. Olympic Team in that event, he qualified to swim on the men’s 4 x 200 freestyle relay in Brazil. Congratulations Jack! Along with Katie Ledecky (NCAP / Stanford (deferred) / Stone Ridge / MCSL’s Palisades), PVS now has 2 of its swimmers on the 2016 U.S. Olympic team. Conger also placed 7th in the semifinal of the men’s 200m butterfly, thereby winning a lane in Wednesday’s finals and an opportunity to qualify for a 2nd event in the Olympics. This 7th place finish came soon after his 3rd place finish in the 200m free, so with more rest, look for Jack to finish better in the butterfly finals.
Andrew Seliskar (NCAP / University of California at Berkeley / Thomas Jefferson / NVSL’s McLean) finished right behind Conger in 8th place in the men’s 200m fly, earning the final spot in Wednesday’s final.
Ledecky finished 1st in the semifinals of the women’s 200m freestyle, setting herself up as the #1 seed in Wednesday’s finals and a chance to qualify for a 2nd event in Rio (she’s already qualified in women’s 400m free).
Sarah Haase (Stanford / RMSC / Our Lady of Good Counsel / MCSL’s Flower Valley) and John Shebat (Univ. of Texas / NCAP / Oakton High School / CSL‘s Franklin Farm) just missed spots on the U.S. Olympic team Tuesday night. Haase finished 7th in Tuesday’s finals of the women’s 100m breaststroke, and Shebat placed 6th in the men’s 100m backstroke finals.
