PVS Swimmers at USA Swimming Winter Nationals

The 2016 AT&T Winter National Championships are underway at the Georgia Tech McAuley Aquatic Center, in Atlanta, Georgia. The McAuley Aquatic Center has three pools—50 m x 25 m competition pool, 25 yd. diving well with full towers and 5-1m and 3-3m springboards, and a separate recreational pool with an indoor water slide. The facility also seats 1950 spectators in individual chair-back seats. The McAuley Aquatic Center was the site of the 1996 Olympic Aquatic events where 4 world records were broken, and the campus also served as the Olympic Village and Boxing venue during the Games. Most recently the 2006 Men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving championships were held at the facility where records were broken every night.

For reference, there are a bonus, consolation, and championship final in each individual event at this Championship (except the 1650 yard freestyle events, which will have only the fastest heat swimming in the finals session). In the Finals, the B (consolation) heat will swim first, followed by the A (championship) heat. After all the A and B heats are completed, the C (bonus) heat is swum. All relays are swum at the end of the “A/B” finals session, prior to beginning the C heats.

Results are in from the first night of individual swimming (December 1),  and the PVS swimmers fared well!

In the Women’s 500 Freestyle, Sinead Eksteen finished 4th in the ‘B’ Heat (12th overall), Claire Nguyen finished 3rd (19th overall) and Madison Waechter finished 7th (23rd overall) in the ‘C’ Heat.

In the Men’s 500, Sam Pomajevich had a close race in the ‘A’ Heat and finished 4th overall, just a bit off of his prelim swim time.

In the Women’s 200 IM, Katie Mack swam in the ‘B’ Heat, earning a 7th place (15th overall).

The Men’s 200 IM also had 2 NCAP swimmers in the ‘B’ Heat, Will Cumberland swam to a 5th place finish (13th overall) and Sam Pomajevich came back after the 500 to finish 7th in the heat (15th overall), impressive back-to-back swims from Sam! Spencer Rowe rounded out the 200 IM with a 5th place finish in the ‘C’ Heat, (21st overall).

In the Women’s 50 free, Sydney Fisher competed in the ‘B’ Heat and snagged 3rd (11th overall).

In each of the 6 contested the relay events (4 swum on Wednesday, 2 Thursday), NCAP has put a team in the top 8.

The National Championships meet will conclude December 3rd. Feel free to watch online:
