Team USA Tops Medal Table at FINA World Championships (25m)

Backed by four medals on the final night of competition, Team USA won the medal table with 30 at the FINA World Championships (25m) at Windsor, Canada’s WFCU Centre. The Americans also captured the top team point total with 1027 points.

Team USA earned 30 medals – eight gold, 15 silver and seven bronze over the six-day competition. The American’s medal haul is the second-most medals won by Team USA at FINA World Championships (25m), only topped by the 2004 FINA World Championships (25m) in Indianapolis where the home-advantage led the U.S. to win 41 medals overall.

Closing the session with a gold was the women’s 4x100m medley relay team of Ali DeLoof (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Club Wolverine), Lilly King (Evansville, Ind./Indiana University), Kelsi Worrell (Westampton, N.J. University of Louisville) and Mallory Comerford (Kalamazoo, Mich./University of Louisville). The quartet finished in a new championship record of 3:47.89, winning by almost a full second over runner-up Canada.

Team USA picked up three individual medals tonight, Worrell leading the way with a runner-up finish in the 100m butterfly lowering her own American record by .20 to finish in 55.22. Worrell was just out-touched by Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu who finished only .10 ahead for gold.

Americans Jacob Pebley (Corvallis, Ore./California Aquatics) and Madison Kennedy (Avon, Conn./SwimMAC Carolina) took home their first individual world championship medals tonight. Pebley with a runner-up finish in the men’s 200m backstroke with a time of 1:48.98. Kennedy taking the bronze in the women’s 50m freestyle finishing in 23.93.
