Sherwood Girls, Churchill Boys Win Metros

A loud and packed crowd rocked Germantown Indoor Swim Center last night during finals of the 2018 Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships (Metros).

On the women’s side, the Warriors at Sherwood High School won the 2018 Metros title with 362 points, followed by Holton-Arms in second (304 points), and Stone Ridge taking third (293 points).  We correctly predicted that Sherwood would win, but wrongly forecasted that Stone Ridge would finish ahead of Holton-Arms.

On the men’s side, last year’s runner-up, Churchill High School, won this year’s Metros with 324.5 points, followed by Georgetown Prep in second (298 points) and Richard Montgomery High School coming in third (261.5 points).  Churchill is the first public school to win the mens’ Metro title since 2000.  Our simulation correctly predicted the top three finishers (yay us!).

As for individual swimmers, Sophomore Phoebe Bacon (Stone Ridge) went a 52.91 in the Womens 100 Fly to beat the 53.04 Metros record that Kylie Jordan set in 2016.  Ms. Bacon, Makenzie Higgins, Erika Chen and Tia Thomas also finished in 3:27.07 in the Womens 400 Free Relay to beat the Metros record that Walt Whitman High School set in 2012.

Senior Madeline Pfaff (Bethesda-Chevy Chase) claimed the womens’ 1-meter diving title with 485.5 points, with defending champion, Hannah Montau, (Seneca Valley) coming in second with 465.45 points.  Michael Parker (Sherwood) won the mens’ diving championship with 419.9 points, followed by Quinn Westwood (Churchill) in second with 408.25 points.
