By Contributor: Brenten Gilbert

Coming off of a successful campaign to claim the Red Division title last season, the Bridlewood Bridlewaves began their quest for a repeat last Saturday by heading to Kingsbrooke to square off against one of last year’s Red Division opponent. The Sea Lions, a perennial rival to the BWaves, played the gracious hosts and posted some impressive times, including two league records set by sisters Lucy Daniel (9-10 Girls Backstroke) and Abby Daniel (13-14 Girls Breaststroke).

The BWaves charged out of the gates with an impressive showing in the relays, claiming first place in ten of the eleven opening events, to build an early lead. The team remained atop the scoreboard throughout the meet, en route to becoming one of three teams in the league to break 3000-point barrier for the week. The final tally for the meet was 3002-2211.

Among the highlights were Jordan Durocher went three for three on her individual events to set new records in the 13-14 Girls 100m IM (1:09.22), 50 Back (31.68 seconds) and 50 Fly (30.83 seconds). The Individual Medley record had been in place since 2008. Jacob Thorpe also broke two long-standing team records for 8&U Boys 25m Freestyle (set in 2008) and the 25m Butterfly (set in 2010). The new records now stand at 18.14 seconds and 19.40 seconds, respectively.

Rounding out the record-breaking swims, the 13-14 Boys Freestyle team of John Verosko, Ryan Chmielenski, Blake Eyre, and Joe Durocher set a new standard of 1:52.44. The 9-10 Girls relay team of Madalyn Witt, Hazel Klein, Haley Edenberg, and Makenzie Witt also combined to post a league-best mark in the 100m Freestyle (1:05.58), lowering team record in the process. Paul Querijero also laid claim to the 9-10 Boys 50m Freestyle record, lowering the previous standard by 0.90 seconds. The new record stands at 33.31 seconds.

With week one in the books, the BWaves look forward to hosting Braemar next week, while the Sea Lions will be on the road to swim against the  Piedmont Tsunamis.
