Griffin Oehler, Georgetown Prep

A repeat Player of the Year selection, Oehler was the driving force behind Georgetown Prep’s victory at the Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Championships in February. He won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:44.11 and the 100-yard backstroke in 47.15 at the championship meet, helping the Hoyas win the Metros crown. At the Interstate Athletic Conference championships, Oehler set meet records in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke as Georgetown Prep won its 25th consecutive league title. Oehler is committed to Florida.

First Team

Charlie Begin, Churchill

Begin starred at Maryland states, claiming two individual crowns to help the Bulldogs finish as the state runner-ups in the 4A/3A classification. Begin won a tightly contested 200-yard freestyle in 1:39.30 before dominating the 100-yard backstroke in 48.70 later in the meet. In the latter race, Begin cleared the field by nearly two seconds.

Ivor Brown, Chantilly

Brown won the Virginia Class 6 diving crown with a 584.50-point outing, clear of the rest of the pack by over 100 points. His standout performance helped the Chargers finish second at states. Brown is committed to Tennessee.

Joey Coleman, Potomac Falls

Coleman claimed two individual state titles at the Virginia Class 5 state title meet. His personal best time of 1:37.31 was just enough to earn a victory in the 200-yard freestyle – Coleman out-touched the second-place finisher by just four-hundredths of a second for the win. He later won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:27.42.

Luc Dionne, Walter Johnson

The Walter Johnson boys earned another state title this winter, and Dionne was a big reason why. Dionne was the only swimmer to crack the 1:50-mark in the 200-yard individual medley at the Maryland Class 4A/3A state championships – the Wildcats’ standout junior clocked a 1:49.49 to win the race. He later won the 100-yard breaststroke in 54.72, just a few tenths off of a meet record that has stood since 2018.

Alex Grocholski, Colgan

A repeat First Team selection, Grocholski added two more state title victories to his loaded resume to cap a stellar high school career. He won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:47.15 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:26.37 at the Virginia Class 6 state championships in Stafford.

Tyler Kominski, Sherwood

Kominski clocked the fastest 500-yard freestyle in the area this season in a dominant Metros performance. His 4:24.26 in the meet’s longest race was one of the more impressive swims of the evening and was over four seconds faster than his time in the same race last season.

Kyle Li, Chantilly

Kyle Li, a Columbia commit, was the fastest breaststroker in the area this season. At the Virginia Class 6 state championships, he toppled the state record with a time of 53.54 in the 100-yard breaststroke. He also took second in the 200-yard individual medley.

Yaron Li, Chantilly

Yaron Li dominated the sprint freestyle events at the Virginia Class 6 state championships for the Chargers. He won the 50-yard freestyle in 20.25 – a half-second clear of the field – then won the 100-yard freestyle in 44.07.

Tyler Phillips, Trinity Christian

Phillips shined at the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association championships. The senior posted the fastest 100-yard butterfly time in the area this season with his 47.15-second performance. He also won the 100-yard freestyle at the meet in 45.13.

Andrew Vanas, Georgetown Prep

Vanas was a key cog in one of Georgetown Prep’s most successful seasons in recent memory. He claimed both individual titles in the sprint freestyle events at Metros – he won the 50-yard freestyle in 20.55 and the 100-yard freestyle in 45.17. He was also a member of the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays that took first at the meet.

Coach of the Year

Meghan Overend, Langley

Overend led a loaded Langley squad back to the top of the Virginia Class 6 classification in February. The Saxons scored in the top-three of every individual race at the championship meet to win their fourth state title and third in the last four years.
