3 Herndon High School, Machine Aquatics Swimmers Sign National Letters of Intent

Meilus, Giniezcki, and Cudahy commit to swim, respectively, for Virginia Tech, Auburn, and the University of Virginia

Wednesday, November 9 is known as National Signing Day across the United States, and it was a busy day at Herndon High School in Virginia.  Seniors Emily Meilus, Christian Giniezcki and Dylan Cudahy — each products of Machine Aquatics — signed National Letters of Intent to swim at the Division I level.  Meilus and Cudahy elected to remain in state, Meilus to swim for the Virginia Tech Hokies and Cudahy for the Virginia Cavaliers. Giniezcki heads to the deep south to swim for the Auburn Tigers.

“It’s not often you get even a single swimmer of the caliber of Emily, Christian, or Dylan,” said Herndon Coach Kathy McLaughlin. “To have three at this level in the same class has been extraordinary, and it’s been fun to watch them develop and prepare for the next level.”

Meilus is a two-time 6A state champion in the 100-yard backstroke and a 2012 Olympic Trial qualifier. She currently holds four individual team records at Herndon and her name also appears as part of two record-breaking relay teams. Giniezcki holds Herndon’s school records in backstroke and butterfly. He was the 6A state runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly a year ago. His performance in the 200-meter backstroke at NCSA Junior Nationals in August was a 2016 Oympic Trial qualifying time, an event that he won. Cudahy holds Herndon school records in the 500, 200, and 100 freestyle as well as the 200 I.M.  Like Giniezcki, Cudahy swam a qualifying time for the 2012 Olympic Trials in the 400-meter I.M. at NCSA Junior Nationals this summer, winning the event.

Cudahy and Ginieczki also are part of three record-holding Herndon relays, meaning that, together, they own nine of 11 men’s team records. Add in Meilus’s connection to the records on the women’s side, and the trio will leave Herndon with their names on at least 15 of the school’s 22 team records.
