VHSL Class 6 Championship Underway

March 4-5 Stafford, Virginia

In an announcement on February 20th, VHSL Executive Director, John ‘Billy’ Haun postponed the scheduled Swim Championships from February 22-23rd to March 4-5th.
“The VHSL staff has been monitoring the severe weather conditions that have impacted different regions of Virginia. After communicating with several school divisions in those areas and the Governor’s issuing a State of Emergency for the Commonwealth, the VHSL has made a decision to cancel all VHSL state championships scheduled for this weekend.”
“Securing state swimming and diving venues poses unique challenges. Like wrestling, some original venues may be unavailable next weekend. The schedule for state swimming and diving could also depend on the availability of judges.”

The following list provides the date(s) for the re-scheduled Championship Meets and locations:

The Class 6 Diving competition concluded last night (March 4) with Nathaniel Grannis (WT Woodson) capturing the top spot for the Boys and Marleigh daSilva (James Madison) for the Girls.
Grannis and Ivor Brown (Chantilly), Thibault Lede (Oakton) and Rem Turatbekov (Thomas Jefferson) occupied the top spots from Prelims through Finals. While Grannis held a firm lead on the top spot, the battle for 2-4th was fierce. After the semi-final round, Lede held a 29 point gap on Turatbekov, however in the Final round Turatbekov made his move and captured 3rd by 7 points! This was the 3rd and culminating win for Nathaniel Grannis as he captured the title at the Patriot District meet, the Occoquan Regional, and now the Class 6 State meet, which is his 2nd State Championship title!
In the Girls event Marleigh daSilva held a firm lead – 19 points in the first round, expanded to 47 points in the semi-finals and ultimately winning by 56 points! Isabelle Whang (Oakton), Beatrice Sultanaeva (Robinson) and Cecilia Yen (Yorktown) were within 30 points of each other through the end of the semi-final round. In the final round, Cecilia Yen earned enough points in her dives to surpass Sultanaeva for 3rd place by 1.05 points while Isabelle Whang was 29 points clear in 2nd. Marleigh won the Concorde District, Northern Region Championships and now the Class 6 State meet, which is also her 2nd title- what an exciting start to the meet!

For the swimming portion of the meet, the Prelims were held this morning (March 5), with Finals at 5:15 PM. As a reminder, the meet is scored out to 16 places: Points will be awarded starting with 1st place receiving 20 points as follows: Swimming events: 20-17-16-15-14-13-12-11-9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. Relay events: Double individual points (40-34-32-30-28-26-24-22-18-14-12-10-8-6-4-2).

Last year the Langley Boys and Yorktown Girls took home the team titles (repeat champions). This year after prelim results, it looks like the Chantilly Boys and Battlefield Girls are in the mix to upset the incumbent champions. In the individual races, Sadie Buckley (Fairfax) scorched her prelim swims in the 200 IM and 500 Free, Josh Howat (Lake Braddock) swam well enough to secure the top seed in the 50 and 100 Freestyle and Alyssa Sagle (Battlefield) took the top spots in the 100 Free and 100 Back, both swims within .5 of her best times.
