The annual MCSL Coaches Invitational meet features the top 8 swimmers in each event at the conclusion of the 3rd week of dual meet competition. The timing of the meet for a ‘check-in’ swim for the swimmers headed to US Swimming National/NCSA meet(s) at the end of the month as well as opportunities for the younger swimmers to get their first try at the Olympic size pool and distance. Each year we see numerous swimmers make significant breakthroughs-some have made their National time standards and some have surpassed Olympic Trial standards (Erin Gemmell, 200 Free 2022). This year was no different, we witnessed Luc Dionne (Old Georgetown) swam his personal best in the 200 Breaststroke (2:16.80), which is just off the National qualifying standard of 2:16.09 and 2024 Olympic Trial 2:15.99. Viona Sunjaya (Arora Hills) followed up with a best time of her own (2:38.04), surpassing the Jr. National standard of 2:38.59, which appears to be her first Jr. National qualification! Virginia Hinds (CCRA) surpassed the Jr. National standard in the 100 Butterfly, going 1:01.46, which is also her personal best.
As we rundown the results of the next two events you’ll see they were dominated by swimmers from Stonegate- there was at least 1 Stonegate swimmer in 11 of the 20 races and in 7 of those races their swimmer placed either 1st or 2nd. Amazingly, in the 8 & Under Girls Breaststroke, Stonegate placed 1st and 2nd, while in the 8 & Under Boys Butterfly, they placed 1st, 3rd and 4th! Quite the crew of powerhouse 8 & Unders, we’ll certainly be watching as they grow through the sport.
