The 2017 Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) State Diving Championships concluded last Friday (Feb. 24) at the University of Maryland – College Park with spectacularly close competition.
On the girls’ side, Melissa Novak (Oakdale) finished with 420.05 points, just 0.15 points ahead of the 419.90 points of Maddy Pfaff (Bethesda – Chevy Chase) and 2.35 points ahead of the 417.70 points of Kamryn Umbel (Richard Montgomery). Novak’s first place finish at States this week was a welcome step up from her 2nd place finish last week at the 3A-2A-1A West Regionals. Pfaff had placed first last week at the 4A-3A West Regionals and second at Metros two weeks ago.
The boys’ competition also enjoyed some drama, with Mory Gould (Churchill) taking first place with 474.55 points over Joey Canova (Quince Orchard) with 447.70 points and Patrick Collishaw (Walter Johnson) with 446.65 points. Gould’s first place finish this week at States is redemption of sorts given his second place finish to Canova at both 4A-3A West Regionals last week and Metros two weeks ago.
Here are the complete diving results from the 2017 MPSSAA State Diving Championships.

Maddy Pfaff placed first at regionals, not second.
Fixed – thanks.
