RFTW Swimmer of the Year, All-DMV Team, and ‘Who Swam It Fastest’ in 2017-18

The high school season concluded about a month ago, allowing us some time to take stock of how fast the various meets and swims were in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia (DMV) area. We captured results from all the high school division, region, state and invitational championship meets and compiled the top 16 times for each event.

In individual high school events in the DMV, there were 59 Automatic All American and 118 All American Consideration qualifying swims.  In three events (Women’s 100 Backstroke, 100 Butterfly, and 200 IM), all 16 athletes on the All-DMV list for those events swam at least an All American Consideration time!  That is, the women’s 100 Backstroke had 5 Automatic and 11 Consideration times, while the women’s 100 Butterfly had 10 Automatic and 6 Consideration times, and the 200 IM had 6 Automatic and 10 Consideration. On the Men’s side, the top event was the 200 free where 12 of the 16 times met either an Automatic or All American Consideration time standard, with the top three achieving the Automatic standard.

Based on the 2017-2018 high school swimming season, below are our awards for “Who Swam It Fastest”, the All-DMV Team, and Swimmer of the Year.

Who Swam It Fastest

To determine who swam a particular high school event the fastest, we analyzed which swimmer had the fastest time in comparison to the relevant All American standard.  (For this analysis, we left in the top swims from athletes that are outside of the DMV, but removed them for consideration for the ‘All-DMV’ teams (see below)).

Victoria Huske was the only swimmer to top the leaderboard in two events. Her 50 freestyle time was the fastest swim in relation to the All American Standard with a differential percentage of 3.66. This time would be the 6th best in the country according to PrepSwimming.com, however the VHSL Class 6 State meet hasn’t been reported to the website.

On the Men’s side, Khalil Fonder topped the leaderboard twice and had the best performance in the 100 Backstroke at 3.52%, which also earned him 9th in the country via PrepSwimming.com.

All-DMV Team

We all know that the Washington Post identifies ‘All-Met’ swimmers each year (Boys, Girls)citing their judgement and placement in championship meets as criteria.  But we also want to recognize high school swimmers in our area based on how the NCAA/College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) determines their All-American teams, so we’re creating an “All-DMV Team” award.

Basically, if we were to simulate a single championship meet, the top 1-8 finishers in each event would be First Team All-DMV, and the next 9-16 would be Second Team All-DMV.  Also, to be considered for the All-DMV team and Swimmer of the Year, the swimmer/school must be within a 50 mile radius of Washington D.C.  Thus, Khalil Fonder (attends school in Roanoke, VA) and Emma Muzzy (who also attends school in Roanoke, VA) are out of the radius for consideration.

Swimmer of the Year

Last, the discussion for Swimmer of the Year.  In some team sports (e.g., NBA/MLB), this honor is given to the athlete that has the highest impact on the team and has elevated the team to great performances. In other sports, this honor is given to the athlete that has the best single/multiple performances in a specified event.

Here’s what we’re using for our criteria:

  1. The swimmer must have at least 1 top time in an event in the DMV;
  2. S/he has a faster time than the All American standard for an event (and the higher percentage above the standard, the better);
  3. S/he is ranked in the country as provided by PrepSwimming.com; and
  4. As a tie-breaker/additional consideration, number of swims in the top 16

Women

Based on the criteria above, Victoria Huske (DMV ranks: 1st 50 free, 4th 100 free, 9th 100 breast, 1st 100 fly, 5th 200 IM), Phoebe Bacon (DMV ranks: 1st 100 back, 3rd 100 breast, 2nd 100 fly, 7th 200 IM), and Izzy Gatti (DMV ranks: 7th 50 free, 3rd 100 free, 4th 200 free,  6th 100 fly, 1st 200 IM) are the candidates for our female ‘Swimmer of the Year’ award.

Female Swimmer of the Year:

Victoria Huske

Two  #1 performances in the DMV – 50 Free (3.66%, #6 in the U.S. as of 3/31), 100 Fly (3.52%, #3 in the U.S. as of 3/31). Automatic All American in 3 events (50 free, 100 fly, 200 IM) All American Consideration in two (100 Free, 100 Breast). Also swam on Automatic All American 200 Medley Relay (#1 in the DMV, #12 in the US as of 3/31**) and All American Consideration 400 Free Relay (#6 in the DMV, #110 in the US as of 3/31**)

Runner Up:
Izzy Gatti

In the top 8 in the DMV in 5 different events, Automatic All American in 3 events (200 IM, 200 Free, 100 Fly), All American Consideration in two (50 free, 100 free). Also swam on Automatic All American 200 free relay (#1 in the DMV, #39 in the US as of 3/31), 200 Medley Relay (#5 in DMV, #53 in the US as of 3/31), and 400 Free relay (#2 in the DMV, #35 in the US as of 3/31)

Female Diver of the Year:

Maddy Pfaff

Scored 485.50 to win at Metros, also won MPSSAA Class 3/4A State meet and is  #74 in the US as of 3/31

 

Men

Based on the criteria above,  Sean Conway (DMV ranks:  1st 100 free, 1st 200 IM,  3rd 50 Free) Tyler Zuyus (DMV Ranks: 1st 200 free, 12th 100 free, 3rd 500 Free)  Eli Fouts (DMV Ranks: 1st 100 breast, 3rd 100 fly)  are the candidates for our male ‘Swimmer of the Year’ award.

Male Swimmer of the Year:

 Sean Conway

Two  #1 performances in the DMV- 100 Free (.55%, #33rd in the US as of 3/31), 200 IM (2.38%, #10 in the US as of 3/31). Automatic All American in two (100 free, 200 IM), All American Consideration in one (50 free).

Runner Up:
Tyler Zuyus

In the top 16 in the DMV in 3 events, Automatic All American in two events (200 free #18 in the US as of 3/31** and 500 free #39 in the US as of 3/31**). Also swam on All American Consideration 200 Medley Relay (#2 in DMV, #59 in the US as of 3/31**), and 400 Free relay (#1 in the DMV, #55 in the US as of 3/31**).

Male Diver of the Year:

Conor Casey

Scored 579.30 to win the Occoquan Region meet, also won the VHSL Class 6 State meet and is #11 in the US as of 3/31
