Notes from the Deck: July in the DMV
By Reach for the Wall Staff
What a busy month July has been & there’s still 1 week to go! With the Olympic swimming events starting tomorrow morning (our time), feel free to give us a shout out/tag us if you’re having a watch party or want to share some good news from your weekend meets! Our main social media sites are: @rftwdmv on Twitter, @reachforthewall.org on Facebook.
Here’s a quick rundown of some of the big happenings from July in the Summer leagues, PVS and beyond:
July 5th: Prince William Swim League (PWSL) held their annual ‘Stars and Stripes’ meet at the Bridlewood BWaves pool. A full accounting of the meet can be found at the Bridlewood site.
Bridlewood also employed the streaming the system developed by OCCS and provide a quality view of the races for those that couldn’t be there in person: Stars and Stripes Meet
July 7th: NVSL held their annual Relay Carnival which was competed by division and hosted at a pool within each division. NVSL published the following on their site by NVSL President Jen Sayasithsena:
Last week there were 17 successful division relay carnivals. Our thanks to the meet hosts and the many officials and volunteers who helped run each meet. Congratulations to all swimmers who participated. An extra special congratulations to the top-19 relays who qualified for All Star Relays. While the meet will not be held this year, qualifying relays will be given patches and awards based on their seed.
We are also happy to recognize the top-6 teams based on results from a virtual All Star Relay Carnival. Trophies will be awarded to these 6 teams.
The top-6 teams by score are:
- Overlee Flying Fish 711
- Chesterbrook Swim Team 628
- Donaldson Run Thunderbolts 608
- Tuckahoe Tigers 602
- Fair Oaks Sharks 469
- Highlands Swim and Tennis Club 444
July 10th: MCSL Held their annual Coaches Longcourse Invitational. We were able to attend that event and highlight some of the amazing swims in our post: MCSL hosts their mid-summer Long Course Classic
July 15-18: Potomac Valley Swimming (PVS) held their trio of Longcourse Championship Meets, with the 14 & Unders swimming at the freedom Center in Manassas, the Senior/Open Age at Claude Moore and the Junior’s also at Claude Moore. While the 14 & Under and Senior meet were trials/finals, the Junior meet was a timed final event. Unfortunately at each venue, the heat and humidity provided an additional challenge to not only the swimmers but also the pool operators as they had a difficult time maintaining the air quality. The swimmers persisted and many had great performances- Congratulations!!
July 17th: The summer leagues held their 5th week of dual meets. In the MCSL and NVSL, these were the final dual meets of the season before the Divisional showdowns.
