July 11, 2023- Rockville, MD

Reflecting on what we saw Tuesday night, we are astounded at the high-level of performances that are turned in at this meet year in and year out. Last year, 4 records were set during the course of the meet and Tuesday that number was doubled- 8 new records were set!
Adriano Arioti (Rockville) got the night started with a record in the 15-18 200 IM with a blazing fast 2:03.98, just a few tenths shy of the 2024 Olympic Trials cut and ranked 6th in the US for 17 yr olds! Eleanor Sun (Wildwood) came up just short of setting back to back records in the 200 IM as she swam a 2:16.83 (also just shy of the 2024 Olympic Trial cut).
Jeremiah Germosan (Hallowell) electrified the crowd with his 100 Free performance, touching .5 ahead of the meet record, previously held by Andrew Vanas. His time of 56.85 is currently the fastest time in the US for 12 yr olds!! Last year Andrew Vanas just missed breaking the meet record in the 13-14 100 Freestyle, but did not miss on Tuesday his time of 54.03 bested the prior record by .11. His time was good enough for 12th in the US for 14 yr olds.
Brady Begin led the charge of Country Glen swimmers in the 200 Freestyle (who finished 1-2-3), touching just .02 ahead of the prior meet record. His time of 1:53.62 is the 18th fastest in the US for 17 yr olds!
Jack Dawson (Stonegate) was next up in the record setting barrage, as he eclipsed the 13-14 100 Breaststroke record, touching in 1:07.50, almost a full second ahead of the prior record set by Carsten Vissering and the 13th fastest time in the US for 14 yr olds! Joe Umhofer (Wildwood) eclipsed Jed Garner’s record from last year with a 2:18.21, three seconds faster than his best time and good enough for 11th fastest in the US for 17 yr olds.
Rafael Fontana (Darnestown) out touched Jeremiah Germosen in the 11-12 100 Butterfly to set the new standard at 1:03.04, the 4th fastest time in the US for 12 yr olds. Incidentally, Germosen clocked the 5th fastest time in the US with his 1:03.17. Rounding out the record breakers and rightfully closing the meet on a super positive swim, Sarah Eliason (Rockville) eclipsed the 100 Butterfly mark set by Phoebe Bacon by .02, swimming the distance in 1:00.66! That time puts her at 14th fastest in the country for 17 yr olds.

We hoped to provide some perspective on how fast this meet has become and where the record-breakers fall within the National rankings. Thanks again to Marcus Chen for capturing the determination and emotion of the swimmers in the following pictures. Be sure to check out his Instagram where he’s posted additional shots from this meet along with the portfolio of shots from other meets.

Our team has done a lot of introspection about the season. We need to win back the hearts of the countless Rats who transferred away to StoneBridge before we poach talent from our usual spots Germantown, UC, King Farm and Eldwick

Most readers have no interest in following the stories of teams who poach talent and never move up and down within the league. My team has been among the top in A, and also been as low as G in recent years; let me tell you, it is incredibly fun and interesting when a team makes a jump from G to D or E to C; surely, it is also thrilling for teams jumping from L to I, or even O to N. It’s interesting to see neighborhood pools cycle, dramatic to feel that it’s all going wrong when you drop three divisions, but then heartening to find yourself rising back to the same one 2 years later. The plot is thicker and better for readers when it deals with a team that has moved around a lot, as opposed to one that simply sits around the top thanks to tactics that have more to do with winning at all costs than fun and community.

            Martha Slick,

Which teams are you suggesting are using “winning at all costs” tactics? And why don’t you provide specific examples of those tactics, rather than just making vague allegations? If you are going to criticize other teams, show a little backbone.
