This year marked the 60th Anniversary of the Metro’s Invitational Championship meet and this year was no different than recent years, the athletes delivered some great performances! There was a considerable amount of hype concentrated on the Team titles, but also anticipation for what events the top swimmers would compete. Returning individual champions, for the Girls are Andrea Dworak (2024 200, 500 Free), Virginia Hinds (2024 100 Free, 100 Back), and Isla Bartholomew (2024 100 Breast) and for the Boys there were no returning champions, so each event was wide open. In the Team championship race, the Walter Johnson women were the early favorites while Holton Arms came into the meet fresh from winning the WMPSSDL Championship. The Boys meet was between two schools from the outset, DeMatha and Gonzaga. DeMatha started the Championship season by winning the National Catholic meet in early January, while Gonzaga won the WCAC and WMPSSDL meets by slim margins. Thus, the Metro meet was
As reported in our earlier post, the diving competition took place Wednesday for the Boys and Thursday for the Girls, with Whitman garnering 63 points in the Boys competition and B-CC girls capturing 61 while the Whitman girls started the meet with 58.
The prelim races were fairly typical Saturday morning, however with the threat of wintery weather, the meet directors decided to conduct the Final session 90 minutes earlier with the meet starting at 4pm. Standout swims came from Griffin Oehler (Georgetown Prep) in winning the 200IM and 100 Backstroke. Throughout his season, he showed versatility, posting top times at the WMPSSDL Championship in the 200 freestyle-1:37.64 (#27 in the country) and at the National Catholic meet winning 100 Breaststroke in 55.41 (#42 in the country). Other two event winners were Andrea Dworak (Blake), who defended her titles from last year in the 200 and 500 Free, achieving Automatic All American times in both races. Virginia Hinds (B-CC) the other 2 event winner (100 Freestyle, 100 Backstroke) was also recognized as the Outstanding Swimmer of the meet for her win in the 100 Freestyle in 49.35!
Here’s the Top 3 in each event, with indicators if the swim qualified for NISCA All American status and when applicable if the performance is listed in SwimCloud within the top 100 high school swims across the US.
