Walter Johnson Girls, Gonzaga Boys Win Metros

A loud and packed crowd rocked Germantown Indoor Swim Center last night during finals of the 2017 Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships (Metros).
On the women’s side, the Lady Wildcats at Walter Johnson High School won the 2017 Metros title with 311 points, followed by last year’s champion, Sherwood High School (282.5 points), and last year’s runner up, Churchill High School (273 points). The simulation we published Friday correctly predicted that Walter Johnson and Sherwood would finish 1st and 2nd, but calculated that Churchill would finish 5th (behind Holton Arms and Blair).
On the men’s side, Gonzaga College High School won Metros for the 2nd year in a row with 374 points, followed by Churchill High School (324 points) and Georgetown Prep (318 points). Our simulation correctly predicted that Gonzaga would finish 1st, but calculated that Georgetown Prep would beat Churchill.
So, Churchill’s men and women generally outperformed their seeded placement last night. As a reward, the Bulldogs won the overall team title with 597 points, followed by Walter Johnson (473 points), Our Lady of Good Counsel (376 points), Gonzaga (374 points) and Bethesda-Chevy Chase (373.5 points).

With regard to public vs. private schools, the aggregate team scores of the public schools on the mens’ side beat those of the private schools (1921 points vs 1573 points). Ditto for the women’s side (2198 public points vs. 1294 private points).
For those who argue that public schools won simply because public schools outnumber private schools, we also calculated the aggregate score based on the same number of public and private schools (i.e., 12 private schools vs. the top 12 public schools on the mens’ side; 16 private schools vs. the top 16 public schools on the womens’ side). Even in this case, the public schools still won for both men (1810 vs 1573 points) and women (2179 vs. 1294 points). Here is the spreadsheet for you SwimNerds.
As for individual swimmers, Freshman Phoebe Bacon (Stone Ridge) went a 53.94 in 100 back to beat the record that Kristina Li (Wootton) set in 2014. Ms. Bacon also came within a half-second of beating the record of 2015-2016 All-Met Swimmer of the Year, Kylie Jordan (Madeira), in 100 fly. We’re betting that record will fall at next year’s Metros.

Hi WJ Girls Rock! Congratulations on winning this year’s Metro title on the GIRLS’ side. But you realize that Churchill won the OVERALL 2017 Metros team title, right? And you realize that Churchill crushed WJ by 124 points (597 vs 473 pts) en route to that victory, right? Your effort to mock Churchill here is like Japan trying to mock the U.S. for losing Pearl Harbor (but forgetting who won WWII). To spell it out for you, WJ girls won a nice battle at Metros, but Churchill won the war. Better luck next year…
OK, the final winner will be decided at Maryland State. Is it fair?
I don’t think the “overall team title” is a real thing here, if you haven’t realized Gonzaga and Prep are unable to defeat the Churchill girls at swimming. The goal is to win in each gender not this made up overal team score. In 200IM girls at Metros: RFTW introduced just a partial data into the database, and it does reflect on individual and team records in 200IM.
Importing all these times into the database is not an exact science and we have experienced a few hiccups along the way. My daughters times haven’t been updated quite yet either.

Not a high school swim parent just an avid swim fan, so I have no “dog in this fight” and I’m not a fan of “trash talking”. What about everyone just celebrate their own accomplishments (team and/or individual) without the need to bring down others? #SwimUnited

Nope, not the same person. I’m a relatively new swim parent. I never commented on the old site and I believe I have commented fewer than 5 times on this new parent operated sight.
