2017 NASA/ISCA Elite Showcase Classic

By Reach for the Wall staff.

As noted earlier, PVS age group swimmers (i.e., ages 10 & under, 11-12, 13-14) historically have focused on qualifying for the Eastern Zone Short Course Championships (Zones) following the local PVS age group championship meet (e.g., Junior Olympics or JOs).

Increasingly, however, PVS clubs are sending their age group swimmers to “national” age group meets (instead of, or in addition to, Zones) in order to enable more kids on the team to participate in a post-JOs meet, to allow kids to swim in more events than they can at Zones, and/or to expose them to “national” competition from around the U.S. (vs. competition only from within the Eastern Zone).  For PVS clubs, these “national” age group meets include the NCSA Age Group Swimming Championships in Orlando, Florida (March 21-24) and the NASA/ISCA Elite Showcase Classic in Clearwater, Florida (April 5-8).

We covered the NCSA Age Group Champs in Orlando two weeks ago (see e.g., here), and this week we focus on the NASA/ISCA Elite Showcase Classic in Clearwater.  Note that this is the final meet that we will cover before Championship Month for the winter “short course” season draws to a close (and we go on vacation).

The 2017 Elite Showcase Classic (April 5-8), organized by the National Age Group Swimming Association (NASA) and International Swim Coaches Association (ISCA), takes place at the Doyle Aquatic Center in Clearwater.  The PVS teams among the 118 teams participating in this meet include Mason Makos Swim Team (MAKO), Nation’s Capital Swim Club (NCAP), Occoquan Swimming (OCCS), Snow Swimming (SNOW) and The Fish (FISH).

On Day 1, Emma Redman (10 yrs – FISH) won the 500 Free, 50 Back and 100 Breast, Brett Feyerick (14 yrs – NCAP) won 50 Free and 200 Back, Michael Mullen (11 yrs – NCAP) won 50 and 1000 Free, Aiken Do (13 yrs – FISH) won 50 Free, Charles Greenwood (10 yrs – NCAP) won 100 Breast, Kate Hallmark (12 yrs – NCAP) won 1000 Free, Blake Madsen (9 yrs – MAKO) won 100 Breast, Liam Redman (13 yrs – FISH) won Men’s 200 Back, and Chase Travis (14 yrs – NCAP) won Women’s 200 Back,

For those not attending this meet, FloSwimming is providing a Live Feed of the entire meet. This feed does come at a cost ($20 for the month or $150 for an annual subscription), but it is much cheaper than the price of airfare!  Check it out and let us know your thoughts on the live feed experience as this is a service that might be worth bringing to the Washington D.C. area.
