CIF State Championships

By Reach for the Wall Staff.

Following up our post from last week, where we highlighted the California Interscholastic Federation (CIFsectional meets, CIF is holding the state championship meet this weekend (May 19-20).  As expected, those that qualified swam really, really fast!  Here’s the full list of qualifying swimmers , in which you’ll notice the swimmers that met/exceeded the Automatic All American (AAA) and Consideration time standards.  The CIF State meet clearly has both speed and depth.

Below is a comparison of the top freestyle times swum in our D.C./Maryland/Virginia (DMV) area at various championship meets with the seed times at the CIF championships:

Men’s 500 Freestyle AAA time 4:34.19

CIF Top time: 4:24.15, 27 swimmers under the AAA time

DMV Top time: 4:24.31, 5 swimmers under the AAA time

Women’s 500 Freestyle AAA time 4:56.95

CIF Top time: 4:46.34, 13 swimmers under the AAA time

DMV Top time: 4:44.89, 7 swimmers under the AAA time

Men’s 200 Freestyle AAA time 1:39.92

CIF Top time: 1:33.93, 20 swimmers under the AAA time

DMV Top time 1:37.47, 4 swimmers under the AAA time

Women’s 200 Freestyle AAA time 1:50.60

CIF Top time: 1:46.31, 11 swimmers under the AAA time

DMV Top time: 1:46.93, 4 swimmers under the AAA time

Men’s 100 Freestyle AAA time 46.13

CIF Top time: 44.67, 11 swimmers under the AAA time

DMV Top time: 44.24, 2 swimmers under the AAA time

Women’s 100 Freestyle AAA time 51.38

CIF Top time: 49.43, 16 swimmers under the AAA time

DMV Top time: 49.85, 1 swimmer under the AAA time

Men’s 50 Freestyle AAA time 21.07

CIF Top time: 20.27, 13 swimmers under the AAA time

DMV Top time: 20.28, 3 swimmers under the AAA time

Women’s 50 Freestyle AAA time 23.76

CIF Top time: 22.66, 19 swimmers under the AAA time

DMV Top time: 23.19, 2 swimmers under the AAA time

In this snapshot, we see that the DMV top swims are right with those of the CIF, with the biggest differential in the Men’s 200 freestyle, where Northgate High’s Alexei Sancov swam a 1:33.93, which is 7 tenths off the National record! Also note in the CIF championship that the top seed in the Men’s 50 freestyle (and second seed in the 100 free) is Nate Biondi …. yes, the son of USA swimming great Matt Biondi!

DMV Interscholastic Federation just recently had Katie Ledecky, but CIF have no similar talent! I don’t think that DMV Interscholastic is less effective than CIF despite the presented facts!
