VHSL Class 5 & 6 State Champs

We know we’re a day late on the Class 5 meet which completed competition yesterday at the Jeff Rouse Center. We followed along via Meet Mobile & saw some great performances turned in from DMV area swimmers/schools.
Thomas Jefferson won the Boys title, behind some great swims from Michael Zhang (1st 200 IM, 1st 100 Breast) , Evan Zhang (1st 50 Free, 2nd 100 Breast) Will Kohn (1st 100 Back). It is notable that Michael and Evan were separated by .01 in the 100 Breast while taking 1st & 2nd!!! Riverside placed 3rd overall and had some individual event winners. Christopher Kopac took the win in the 500 free and placed 2nd in the 200 IM. Robert Quan took 1st in the 200 Free and 3rd in the 500. As a team, the Riverside quartet of: Christian Szilagyi, Jacob Quan, Christopher Kopac, and Robert Quan took the top spot in 400 Free Relay!
In the girls meet, Mackenzie McConagha won both of her individual events- 100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke. In the 100 Back, she set a new 5A State record, with a time of 53.21, which eclipsed her record from last year of 53.44. Her individual and relay swims helped propel Briar Woods to 3rd overall in the team competition! Janika Perezous from Potomac Falls, was another area swimmer that had a great meet, placing 3rd overall in the 500 free and 2nd in the 100 Back.
